The festive season is well underway - there is a sense of excitement in the air as well as full bellies and sore heads floating around following countless gatherings and office parties. So with Christmas on the horizon, here are some superb gift ideas for the designer in your life.

  • Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation:  This book originally came out in 2003, and it is still the best ‘Apple porn’ on the market for those who love to drool shamelessly over images of iPads, iMacs and iPhones. The book, authored by Melbourne-born, Jonathan Zufi was four years in the making and looks at Apple’s most important products, starting from 1976, and including rare prototypes. Also, included are forwards and essays from an impressive group of luminaries, commentators and influencers in the Apple community. New for this Christmas is the Ultimate Edition, which arrives in a white Cromwell Aristo Grain clamshell case with a pulsing LED ‘on/off switch’ on the cover. Price: USD$99.00 from Iconic Book or Amazon .

  • Flower vase in red : Proving the adage that good things come in small packages, is this gorgeous little mouth-blown flower vase in Christmas red, by Carina Seth-Andersson for Marimekko. The Swedish designer is known for her pared back glass and ceramic work, while still expressing meaningful form. When not working out of her studio in Gustavsberg, Seth-Anderson is a senior lecturer in the product Design Department at Beckhams School of Design. Price: $89 from Marimekko .

  • Zaza Sofa : Splurge this Christmas on the Zaza sofa, created by designer, Charles Wilson and the in-house design team from King Living. The Zaza has already picked up the 2018 Good Design Award, in the Product Design Category, with the judges describing the sofa as an “elegantly resolved design piece that was executed perfectly.” Resting on elegant steel legs, the Zaza features adjustable arms and back, allowing you to really stretch out in style. • Aballs Table Lamp : Created by Jaime Hayon for Parachilna, the Aballs is a perfect combination of craftsmanship and traditional artistry (the glass globe is hand-blown). Part of an entire collection, the base of the small table lamp comes in platinum, gold, copper and black and draws on 1920s Hollywood glamour. Aballs is sure to be a design classic of the future. Price: $1,481 from buydesign

  • Scott Marsh Artwork : This Sydney-based artist was once the leading graffiti artist of his generation, especially when it came to tagging railway carriages. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the UNSW COFA, he began receiving commissions for large-scale commercial murals. Nowadays Marsh’s works are coveted by international collectors. His paintings are created with both brush and spray-can, exemplifying traditional techniques in oils and acrylics, combined with late-1990s street-art. The result is one of the most interesting and dynamic fusions in Australian fine art. His current floral series takes familiar Australian flora and presents it with his former ‘tools of the trade’; spray-cans and bolt cutters. $POA. From Scott Marsh

  • Confetti Planter :  One of the cleverest designs of 2018, are these colourful Confetti Planters by design duo, Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis from DesignByThem. The planters are made from incredibly durable 100 per cent recycled plastic (milk containers, shampoo bottles, etc) and so no two are alike. The outside surface is smooth, making them easy to clean, and being UV stable they are suitable for inside and outdoor spaces. They are available in a range of diameters. Price from: $189 (320 mm) from DesignByThem .

  • Arckit: Invented by architect Damien Murtagh, Arckit is a fun and affordable way to build 1:48 scaled model structures, whether you are a professional architect, hobbyist or a kid who just loves making stuff. The freeform system is based on contemporary panel-building techniques and uses click-and-connect components such as roof tiles, doors, walls and supports. Priced from: $39.95 from Arckit
